SHORT STORY OF THE ASSOCIATION
In 1959, Elías Valiña, a young priest, arrived at O Cebreiro parish church. He promoted, not only the restoration of the legendary Santa María del Cebreiro Sanctuary and Hospital, but he also renewed the traditional welcome to the pilgrim.
Shortly after, in the 70’s, Elías (“the priest of O Cebreiro", as he liked to be called), started to mark the way to Santiago with yellow arrows, helped by his family and friends.
In the eighties, he published the first “guide” and travelled all around Spain, spreading the Camino and encouraging people to create “Asociaciones de Amigos”.
In May 1987, after several years of hard work, the foundation members of the “Asociación de Amigos del Camino de Santiago de la Provincia de Lugo” constituted the General Assembly of Members which elected, unanimously, the following board of directors:
| President | Enrique Álvarez Paredes |
| Vice-president | Elías Valiña Sampedro |
| Secretary | Juan M. Balboa Vázquez |
| Vice-secretary | Amando Losada Losada |
| Treasurer | Mario García Fernández |
| Members | Juan Carlos Fernández Pulpeiro |
| Jaime Félix López Arias | |
| Eloy Rodríguez López |
Many members have been on the different boards of directors throughout these years, working with enthusiasm and care to achieve the purposes of the Association.
During the presidency of Juan Carlos Fernández Pulpeiro (1994-2003) the Association revitalized and promoted the activities carried out during this period.
Since 20th February 2003, Ángel Trabada Gómez is the president of the board of directors and has gone on working so that the association follows its authentic founding motto: promoting and revitalizing the routes on foot along the Camino de Santiago.
